(a) Effective with the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, a person employed in a Texas public college or university is not eligible for membership, service credit, or compensation credit based on employment that is conditioned upon enrollment as a student and compensation paid to the person for work performed as a student employee is not compensation subject to report and deduction for member contributions. For school years prior to the 2017-18 school year, a person employed in a Texas public college or university is not eligible for membership if that employment is conditioned upon enrollment as a student and the person has no other eligible employment during the same payroll period. No person may establish or reinstate credit for previously reported student employment. (b) A person who accepts employment conditioned upon enrollment as a student does not lose any rights from service established as a member when student enrollment was or is not an issue.
